Officially launched in 2022, the Hudson County Mural Arts Program was established by the Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs/Tourism Development to beautify properties owned by the county. The program allows emerging and well-known artists to paint large scale murals in highly trafficked areas around Hudson County. As part of the process, the artists strive to create murals that are reflective of their neighborhoods or choose themes that will enrich the appeal of the area.
The first two murals created under the initiative are on an underpass on Secaucus Road (5th Street) in North Bergen and on a Hudson County Prosecutor’s satellite office on Tonnelle Avenue in Jersey City. The County currently is partnering with the Jersey City Police Department and local residents to create a mural adjacent to a community garden in the Greenville neighborhood of Jersey City.
Murals have been shown to greatly reduce graffiti and augment quality of life. The Hudson County Mural Arts Program will continue to enhance our communities with public art.
