History & Heritage Programs

Hudson County’s history is as rich as the United States’ itself. From the earliest Dutch settlers of the late 1600’s to the millions of immigrants going through Ellis Island up until now, where we are one of the most culturally diverse places on Earth, Hudson County is a place like no other.
The Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs/Tourism Development strives to provide programs that celebrate and promote our incredible people and their histories.

Tours of the

William J. Brennan Court House

Erected between 1903 and 1910, the William J. Brennan Courthouse is the seat of Hudson County’s government. Its exterior has been built in the fashionable Beaux Arts style of the early 20th century, while the interiors have been decorated by some of the most prominent muralists of that period.

The Hudson County Court House served its citizens for fifty-six years until it was deemed to be obsolete and closed in 1966. During its closure it fell prey to vandals and scrappers who destroyed some of the artwork and bronze fittings. Concerned by the possible loss of such an important cultural heritage site, local activists campaigned to save it, and in 1970 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Having escaped demolition, it was completely restored, and reopened in 1989, and today serves as an auxiliary courtroom space.

Hudson County proudly invites you to tour the Brennan Courthouse; just contact Brian Murray at bmurray@hcnj.us or 201-459-2070 ext. 6419 to make an appointment. These tours are history tours, please contact the office two weeks in advance if you require a civics themed tour.
The building is open to the public: Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. Tours can be booked 10 am to 4 pm.
